Midway Alignment – a part of a large transport system
Imagine a world where people and goods travel quickly and smoothly and where Nordic cooperation is encouraged and, at the same time, connected to the global world and the major markets. This is where Midway Alignment comes into play; the project creates benefits for Finland and Sweden and develops good transport connections for both the cargo and the passengers.
Finland, Sweden and the global network
People and goods should be able to move quickly and effortlessly in an eco-friendly way. The regions of Vaasa and Umeå on both sides of the Kvarken are thriving, rapidly growing and internationally significant. The modern ferry traffic as well as the transport connections generate additional growth not only for these regions but also for the countries. The east-west transport route through Northern Europe will be linked more efficiently to the large European TEN-T network which, in turn, makes it easier for goods and people to reach for example the capital regions, Norway’s ice-free ports and the rest of Europe.
Up to 20.7 million euros are being put in the development of the port infrastructures and the planning of the new top-of-the-line ferry for Vaasa and Umeå. This will result in effective cargo handling, a larger operating capacity and improved logistics.
The ferry – the most important piece in the creation of a comprehensive transport puzzle
The design work for the new ferry is in full swing and the first project phase has already been completed. EU, a co-financier of the project, wants to see innovative solutions. The most significant characteristics of the ferry are its reliability, eco-friendliness and energy efficiency, but it is also central that room is allowed for more innovations.
The ship has the best possible Ice Class, 1A Super, and it is designed to minimize the hull resistance. The ship’s main fuel will be liquefied natural gas (LNG), but its engines can also run with other fuels. It is designed to be a hybrid ship, meaning that it can utilize stored electrical energy for ship operation. The batteries can be charged with for example sunlight, electricity from the grid when the ship is in port and even the engines (when they are running). The ship can also be connected to the district heating network when it is in port.
Working together towards a common goal
Midway Alignment is an extensive project in the regions. The great potential of this unique project is recognized by all and, as a result, over 18 organizations participate in the development of the transport concept. Both public organizations and private businesses work towards this common goal, and several cooperation partners from Finnish and Swedish businesses contribute with their know-how and experience to creating something new. The aim of Midway Alignment is to bring people and goods closer to each other by smoothly joining the land with the sea.
The project aspires to make everyday logistics easier for us all. Many people will benefit from this. How will this affect you and how can you contribute?
